Bali, Indonesia – Best Tourist Destination in the World by TripAdvisor

Bali, Indonesia, was selected as this year's top destination based on reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions, gathered over a 12-month period, as well as traveler booking interest on TripAdvisor, the travel planning and booking site.

And it wasn't another major metropolis that overthrew it, but an island about the size of Delaware that is probably already on your bucket list.

Bali the Best Tourist Destination in the World by TripAdvisor

While other island destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Crete, Greece, made the list, Bali held a special place in travelers' hearts this year ... and it's easy to see why.

Surfers can gape at the Uluwatu temple perched on cliff while waiting for the perfect set. Meanwhile, snorkelers and divers can head to Amed to explore the U.S.S. Liberty, a World War II ship that was torpedoed off the coast in 1942 and is now home to turtles, octopuses and even the famous sunfish.

Over at Kuta you can club until the sunrises in vibrant red hues over the ocean, or head to Ubud for lush green rice patties and cheap massages. The more adventurous can take a 3 a.m. hike to the Mount Batur or let macaques try to steal iPhones from your bag and sit on your shoulders at Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary.

With this incredible variety, it is no wonder that Bali comes out on top of the list.

London has fallen ... in this year's ranking of the world's best tourist destinations. The U.K. capital city, once No. 1 on TripAdvisor's 2016 list of World's Best Destinations, is now sitting pretty in the No. 2 slot..
