Each year, five days after the full moon 20 days 10 months of a traditional Sasak calendar, Sasak people celebrate a traditional Bau Nyala ceremony. This year's dates coincide with 22 to 23 February 2011.

Sasak are the dominant ethnic group living on the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara next from Bali. Bau in Lombok language means "capture" and Nyala is a species of marine worm surfaces, only this time of year.

Australasian Rafting Champs 2010 will be held in Banjarnegara Serayu River on 22 to 26 April 2010. Serayu River was chosen as the place of international rafting championship, because of the unique location on the edge of the highway, so it can be watched from the roadside. This uniqueness is not owned by other regions in Indonesia. In addition, river flows and challenging track, which also became one of the considerations of the Indonesian Rafting Federation (FAJI) and the International Rafting Federation (IRF) to appoint Banjarnegara as host international rafting championship.

Participants will follow Australasian Rafting Champs 2010 came from 12 countries. They are the rafting team winning the national selection results from the countries of the continent of Asia & Australia, continent of Australia, China, India, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Nepal, New Zealand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and of course the host, Indonesia . There is the possibility of an additional two participants from the Continental European countries, namely Russia and Slovakia. Each country is allowed to send two man teams and two women teams where each team consists of one person team manager, a coach, athlete six people, one person reserve, and one person from the media. Total number of participants is estimated to 20 teams, as many as 200 people. Meanwhile, the Indonesian hosts will represented by Arus Liar and Riam Jeram Sukabumi for the man teams, while Team Kapinis West Java and Gadisu North Sulawesi for the womens teams.

In addition to the activities of rafting, the committee also prepares supporting activities such as Expeditionary Kayak, River Boarding Expeditionary which will be followed by clubs from all over Indonesia, Fun Rafting, Bazar at Location Competition, Entertainment for the Communities, and the Fam Tour to several tourism object.

The theme for the current year is "Green Tourism" a direction for the event inspired by the United Nations Climate Change Summit held at Nusa Dua in December 2007.

The Logo of the 1st Asian Beach Games Bali 2008 represents the water element that embodies the sporting event.

The shining sun comes from the emblem of the Olympic Council of Asia and represents its vital role in Asia's sport development and spreading energy created by the solidarity of the OCA.

The selection of the light and deep-blue effects represents the color of Balinese waters.

The two vertical lines represent two ‘Pura’ (Balinese Hindu temple), an image of the gate to a Balinese house of worship which is signifies the ultimate hospitality of the Bali society in honouring and welcoming people from all over Asia.

The two big waves represent the commitment as well as the enthusiasm of the host city to hold the 1st Asian Beach Games.

The letters "BALI 2008" are red to show the spirit of sportsmanship and the typeface selection emphasizes the pride of all athletes competing in Bali.

MASCOT

The Bali Starling (Leucopsar Rothschildi), locally known as “Jalak Bali”, as well as being the official mascot of the 1st Asian Beach Games, is the official mascot of Bali and a bird species endemic to the Island of the Gods.

The Starling was on the verge of near extinction with little numbers remaining in Bali Barat National Park. In 1999, the Begawan Foundation, set up by the creators of the Begawan Giri Estate in Ubud, imported two pairs of the starling to commence the conservation efforts of this important bird. Since then, the Begawan Foundation – Bali Starling Conservation Project has been very successful and has set a significant mark in wildlife conservation by achieving the highest Bali Starling breeding rate in captivity.

The birds were moved to the neighboring island of Nusa Penida where, in collaboration with FNPF’s Nusa Penida Bird Sanctuary, the first release of the birds into the wild was planned. Working together with 35 traditional councils, a local traditional law “awig-awig” was implemented to regulate and sanction the protection of all birds on Nusa Penida.

The bird symbolizes Bali with all its uniqueness and serves as a reminder that the bird, like Bali, is beautiful, yet sacred. It is therefore apt that the official mascot of Bali was chosen as the official mascot for the first Bali Asian Beach Games.

The Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony for the 1st Asian Beach Games Bali 2008 will be held on October 18, 2008 at the GWK (Garuda Wisnu Kencana) in Bukit in Jimbaran . The GWK Covers 239 hectares of land and boasts a statue that was planned to stand taller than the Empire State building in the USA, how ever due to economical reasons, the statue construction was halted in 2003. Wisnu or Vishnu is the Hindu God who is the protector-part of the Hindu trinity, which is Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the destroyer. The unique statue of half man half bird will one day be a national landmark. In front of the head of the garuda bird which has already been completed is an open air stage and amphi-theater for various events and ceremonies. The area will comfortably fit about 5000 invitations only guests for the opening ceremony of the 1st Asian Beach Games. “The Opening Ceremony will be a grand opening to the 1st Asian Beach Games. We will present entertainment that will be uniquely Balinese and Indonesian”, hints Mr. Ervan Ibrahim, Director of events and ceremonies for Babgoc. The Closing Ceremony for the Games will also be held at the GWK Venue.

Madura Island is part of East Java regency that needs a better access. Madura that consist of four regencies has a lot to offer. The interesting part of this attraction is when a rider stands on the ‘Keleles’, yelling and slamming while his hands hold two sticks and slap the bull’s weight and attached to the bulls. A pair of male cow races each other in 200 m length or known with Kerapan Sapi. Madurese always hold this race yearly from sub district level, district, and finally to get a President Cup.

This tradition has done for so long and it is a symbol to thank to God by cow breeders in Madura. Brown cow, a Madurese cow which is always in the race. Tourists are also can notice Sapi Kereman, to enjoy how Madurese takes care of their cows. It is the interesting part, begins with how the Madurese graze the cows, take care of the cow’s health with traditional herbs and train the cow about running. In the middle of bull racing event, there is an additional attraction "Sapi Sono". It is a female bull contest.

Baliem Valley has been the most visited part of the island, especially in the recent years. It is inhabited by the Dani tribesmen, which are one among many tribes who speak related Papuan, or non-Austronesian languages and live in the high central ranges of Irian Jaya. Until the last few decades, the Dani people were some of the most isolated populations by swamps and mountains. They grew root crops, raised pigs and used polished stone axes and adzes. They did not make pottery, but their technology was very much like of the Neolithic of the Old and New Worlds.

There may be 250,000 Dani living in the central mountains. The Western Dani of the Konda or the Yali of the East may live scattered among the steep mountain slopes. The Baliem Valley has one of the highest densities of population in Irian Jaya. The Dani tribes build their huts in a compound nicely express both environmental adaptation and Dani's character. The men's and women's huts have thick thatched roofs which keep out of rain, yet retain the heat from the hearth along with just enough smoke to discourage the mosquitoes. The temperatures of the highland range from 26°C at the day time to 12°C at night. It is even cooler in the Southern region, Habberna lake and higher elevation which reaches down to 7°C at night.

The highlights of the sightseeing are Dani market in town, Wauma villages, and Sinatma hanging bridge which can easily be reached either on foot or by car from Wamena. Farther out are Aikima with its 250-year-old mummy, Suroba, Jiwika, and neighboring villages. With two-hour climbing, you can see the salt spring where the Dani women have been making salt in a primitive fashion for centuries. Outer adventures are southward to Kurima area, where the Dani and Yali ways of life mixed into a unique combination.

How to get to the Baliem Valley is not as difficult as to reach other parts in Irian Jaya. There are daily Merpati flights from Jayapura to Wamena, the district capital of the valley. Incase of the flight is fully booked, there is an option which is flying with Air fast, a cargo plane that sometimes takes passengers. For a short visit around Wamena, there are some fair hotel accommodations while in the villages, tourists may stay at Dani huts. Villages near the town are no longer interesting as recently there are less Dani men wearing koteka. More beautiful scenery with primitive villagers is Southern out to Kurima region. It has no differences, but when you explore up to Baliem George and the villages of Wamena, Tangma, and Ibiroma, you will discover a perfect combination of Dani compound inhabited by primitive tribesmen with adorable scenery.
